DAYTON, Ohio – The Virginia volleyball team jumped out to an early lead against Dayton, but the Flyers won the final three games for a 3-1 (25-30, 30-19, 30-27, 31-29) victory over the Cavaliers in the Dayton Flyer Classic Friday evening (September 20) at Frericks Center. With the loss, Virginia falls to 5-8 on the season, while the Flyers improve to 9-3.

Third-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) notched her fifth double-double of the season with 13 kills and 16 digs to lead the Cavaliers. Third-year rightside hitter Katie Synan (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) fell one kill shy of her career-high as she equaled Davis with a team-best 13 kills. Synan also added three blocks. Third-year libero Whitney Ashcraft (Yorktown, Ind./Burris) turned in her 11th consecutive double-digit dig match as she shared team-high honors with Davis with 16. First-year setter/outside hitter Kristin Chaney (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) dished out a career-high 44 assists and tied her career-best with four blocks. Fourth-year rightside hitter Kiersten Kaufman (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) registered a .333 hitting percentage with eight kills.

Susan Westbrock paced Dayton with 22 kills and an impressive .429 hitting percentage. Erin Treadway and Shannon Gardner each registered 13 kills with Treadway adding 16 digs for a double-double and Gardner hitting .478. Setter Nicole Schott also posted a double-double with 49 assists and 12 digs.

The Flyers hit .220 in the match, while the Cavaliers hit .154. Dayton also held an advantage in both kills (62-55) and digs (62-54). UVa had an edge in the blocking department for the 10th time in 13 matches. The Cavaliers outblocked Dayton 9-4.

Virginia concludes play in the Dayton Flyer Classic with a pair of matches Saturday. At 12 noon, the Cavaliers play Western Kentucky, followed by a 5:00 p.m. match against IUPUI.
