WILLIAMSBURG – The No. 16 Virginia women’s soccer team opened play at the 2002 William & Mary Nike Tribe Invitational with a 2-0 win over George Mason. The win was the Cavaliers’ second straight victory and moves their record to 3-2-1 on the year.
Despite outshooting the Patriots 20-1 in the contest, the game was scoreless until the 78th minute as the Cavaliers scored twice late to record the win. Freshman Julie Napolitano (Ellicott City, Md.) scored her first collegiate goal off a rebound to give Virginia the lead. Senior Darci Borski (Philadelphia, Pa.) would seal the win in the 86th minute on an assist from Sarah Lane (Wheaton, Ill.)
In addition to their 20-1 edge in shots, the Cavaliers had a 10-2 advantage in corners. Anne Abernethy (Atlanta, Ga.) recorded her third shutout of the season in net for Virginia while Naomi Hines made six saves for George Mason.
The Cavaliers return to action Sunday as they play the tournament host, William & Mary, at 3:00 p.m. Virginia returns home Wednesday September 25 to host Temple at Kl?ckner Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
