Virginia first years Allie Flynn (Readington Township, N.J./Hunterdon Central) and Katie Phillips (Fort Worth, Texas/Trinity Valley) both notched goals today to help the Cavaliers take the Terrapins into overtime, but the Terps scored in the extra frame to take the 3-2 victory in Charlottesville. Flynn’s goal came on a rebound on a Virginia short corner while Phillips punched in a cross from the endline to tie the game with under nine minutes remaining in regulation. Virginia’s Emily White (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) made 12 saves in the game.
Maryland jumped on the board first as Colleen Barbieri slotted the ball into the circle and Carissa Messimer one-timed the ball into the cage for a 1-0 lead at the 5:52 mark of the first half. The Cavaliers limited the Terps to three shots and three short corners in the first half and trailed at halftime 1-0.
In the second half Kelli Hill (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) sent a long ball up to Katie Slocum (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) who was fouled as she cut into the circle. On the short corner, Shannon La Vigne (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) took a shot that was saved and popped out to Flynn. Flynn deposited the ball to the top of the nets, tying the game 10 minutes into the second half.
Twelve minutes later the Terps jumped back on top as Izzy Palmer connected on a short corner with assists from Messimer and Boyer. Virginia answered right back as Flynn sent the ball back to La Vigne on a free hit on the near sideline and La Vigne sent the ball down to Katie Nicholson (Clarksburg, N.J./Allentown) on the endline. Nicholson dribbled along the endline and crossed the ball to Phillips, who poked the ball into the cage for the tying goal with under nine minutes to play. Regulation ended in a 2-2 tie.
In overtime the Terps had a pair of corners but were unable to convert. On their third they called timeout and set up a play in which Messimer sent the ball out to Boyer who stopped it for Palmer. Palmer sent the ball across the circle to Barbieri who knocked it in the cage for the game-winner.
The two goals surrendered by Maryland are the most allowed by the Terrapins in 2002.
