CHARLOTTESVILLE – Former Virginia All-American Angela Hucles was one of 18 players named to the United States national team that will compete at the CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup later this month. The team, coached by former Virginia head coach April Heinrichs, will compete in the tournament to earn a berth to the 2003 Women’s World Cup.
Hucles is coming off a productive season with the Boston Breakers of the WUSA. While appearing in 19 games for the club, Hucles had three goals and four assists on the season and participated in the WUSA All-Star Game last month. She has made six previous appearances for the U.S. National team.
At Virginia, Hucles had an impressive career and still is the all-time leading scorer in school history. She scored 59 goals for the Cavaliers from 1996-99 and was a four-time All-ACC first team selection while twice earning All-America honors.
The Women’s Gold Cup will run from October 27 to November 9 at West Coast venues in the U.S. and Canada. The United States is in Group One of the tournament where they will play Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, and Panama. The squad must advance to the final of the tournament, November 9 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., to qualify for next year’s World Cup.
