CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer team recorded a 3-1 victory over the #18 ranked Duke Blue Devils in an Atlantic Coast Conference match this afternoon in front of 2,458 spectators at Kl?ckner Stadium. Virginia jumped out to an early 2-0 lead just over 11 minutes into the match, and the Cavaliers’ quick start was too much for the Blue Devils to overcome.
UVa took a 1-0 lead just 7:10 into the match when Alecko Eskandarian (Montvale, N.J./Bergen Catholic) scored his 18th goal of the season. Eskandarian was standing in the box and gathered a loose ball off of a deflected shot by teammate Jacob LeBlanc (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) and connected on a one-timer to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead. Just over four minutes later (11:16), Ryan Kelly (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) scored his fifth goal of the season and gave Virginia a 2-0 lead when he headed in a corner kick cross from LeBlanc inside the box. Kelly’s goal eventually became the game-winning score.
Duke cut UVa’s lead to 2-1 when Owoicho Adogwa scored at the 15:26 mark when Donald McIntosh and Trevor Perea found him in the box with a pair of passes that Owoicho chipped-in for a score. The Cavaliers took their 2-1 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Virginia added an insurance goal at the 69:53 mark when Rob Wright (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) netted his fifth goal of the season with an open goal score. Duke goalkeeper Justin Trowbridge came out of keeper box to tally a save on a shot by Eskandarian, however, the ball squirted loose and Wright gathered the ball and chipped-in a shot to make it a 3-1 game.
Virginia goalkeeper David Comfort (Richmond, Va./Monacan) made five saves in goal to help preserve the Cavaliers’ victory. The Blue Devils’ Trowbridge managed five saves in the loss.
With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 8-5-0 overall, 2-3-0 in the ACC. The loss drops Duke’s record to 9-4-1 overall, 3-2-0 in the conference. UVa improved to 32-30-7 all-time against the Blue Devils and remained undefeated at home this season with a perfect 7-0-0 record.
The Cavaliers will return to home action on Wednesday, October 23rd when the Cavaliers host the Old Dominion Monarchs. The contest is scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM and will be played at UVa’s Kl?ckner Stadium. Virginia’s match on Wednesday is part of a doubleheader, with the UVa women’s soccer team playing the second contest at 7:00 PM in a match against Duke.
