Cavaliers Fall to Duke 5-2

University of Virginia hockey captain Cara Unterkofler (Centreville, Va./Centreville) had an assist and a goal to help pace the Cavalier offense today, but it was not enough as the Hoos fell to Duke 5-2 in the first round of the ACC Tournament. Unterkofler tipped in a Shannon LaVigne (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) short corner shot in the first half and then fed a through ball to Sara York (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) for the second Cavalier goal.
Duke got on the board first with a pair of goals from Katie Grant. She scored on a shot from the top of the circle in the 11th minute and then knocked in her own rebound seven minutes later for a 2-0 Duke lead 17:16 into the game.
The Blue Devils drew a corner 13 minutes later but Unterkofler flew out on defense and started a breakaway that saw the ball go upfield to Katie Slocum (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) and then to York, who was just inside the 25. A Duke foul resulted in a short corner for the Cavaliers. The first two corner plays resulted in another short corner for Virginia, and on the third play LaVigne rocketed a shot to the post and Unterkofler tipped it in for the goal with 4:45 to play in the first half.
Duke opened up the second half with a three goal spurt in seven minutes to take a 5-1 lead in the 50th minute, as Grant scored again and assisted Kim van Kirk on a pair of goals.
Virginia answered as Rosemary Walker (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) sent a sideline hit to the middle of the field to Unterkofler. Unterkofler took the ball and sent it upfield to York, who put it in the boards for Virginia’s final goal of the game, coming in the 65th minute.
