CHARLOTTESVILLE – University of Virginia Athletics Director Craig Littlepage has been appointed by the NCAA Championships/Competition Cabinet to the 10-member Division I Men’s Basketball Committee. Littlepage’s term begins on September 1, 2002, and continues through September 1, 2006.

Also joining the committee at that time is Gary Walters, the athletics director at Princeton University.

The basketball committee is responsible for the administration of the NCAA Basketball Championship Tournament. One of its primary functions is the selection of teams that compete in the annual tournament nicknamed “March Madness.” The chairman of this year’s committee is North Carolina State University Athletics Director Lee Fowler whose term ends this September.

Littlepage has been a member of the Committee on Infractions since September of 2001. He will leave that committee in order to accept his new committee assignment. He previously was a member of the Academics, Eligibility and Compliance Cabinet serving on the Recruiting Subcommittee and the Student-Athlete Reinstatement Subcommittee. He was chair of the Reinstatement Subcommittee in 1999-2000.

Littlepage was named Virginia’s athletics director on August 21, 2001. He had served as interim athletics director since June 1, 2001, following the resignation of former athletics director Terry Holland to become a special assistant to University President John T. Casteen III. He also served as interim athletics director at Virginia from December of 1994 to July of 1995, while a search was conducted to replace former UVa athletics director Jim Copeland.

Littlepage has been a member of Virginia’s athletic administration since 1990. He served six years as senior associate director of athletics, managing all aspects of the athletic department’s day-to-day operations. Before that, Littlepage spent four years as associate director of athletics for programs at UVa. He originally joined Virginia’s athletic administrative staff in 1990 as an assistant athletics director.

He served two stints as an assistant coach with the Virginia men’s basketball program from 1976 to 1982 and from 1988 to 1990.

Littlepage held head basketball coaching positions at the University of Pennsylvania (1982-85) and at Rutgers University (1985-88) before returning to Virginia. He was also an assistant basketball coach at Villanova University for two years and at Yale University for one year before joining the UVa basketball program as an assistant coach in 1976.

A native of LaMott, Pa., Littlepage earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1973. He was a member of three Ivy League basketball championship teams at Pennsylvania and was instrumental in the Quakers’ drive to three consecutive NCAA Eastern Regional Tournament appearances.
