Virginia Wrestling Records a Pair of Dual Match Victories Over Millersville and UNC-Greensboro

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia wrestling team faced the Millersville Marauders and the UNC-Greensboro Spartans in a pair of non-conference dual matches, and also played host to a dual match between Millersville and UNC-Greensboro this evening at UVa’s Memorial Gymnasium. Virginia defeated Millersville by the score of 34-10 before defeating UNC-Greensboro 41-8. Millersville was a 37-10 winner over UNCG in the other dual match.
In Virginia’s match with Millersville, the Cavaliers jumped out to a 25-0 lead after the first five bouts and never looked back. UVa’s Brian Sticca (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) was awarded a forfeit at 125 before Joe Alexander (Franklin, N.J./Delsea Regional) pinned Corey Packer at 1:28 in the 133 class to give Virginia a 12-0 lead. The Cavaliers’ Bob Seidel (Wall, N.J./Wall) earned a hard-fought 2-1 decision at 141 over Derek Sola before Paul Bjorlo (Reston, Va./South Lakes) pinned Shawn Blanchard at 4:23 in the 149 class to make it a 21-0 lead for UVa. Virginia’s #13 ranked Tim Foley (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) picked up a 19-7 major decision victory over Craig Pequignot at 157 to give the Cavaliers a 25-0 advantage.
UVa’s Will Durkee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) lost a close 4-3 decision to Millersville’s Jesse Reed at 165, and UVa was penalized one team point following the match to make the score 24-3. Virginia’s Brian Muir (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) picked up a 14-5 major decision over Curtis Yeager at 174 to make it a 28-3 lead for the Cavaliers. The Marauders picked-up a pair of wins at 184 (Mark Knock) and 197 (Adam Schaaf) to pull within 28-10 of Virginia. However, UVa heavyweight Josh Etu (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) put the wraps on UVa’s 34-10 victory by pinning Brian Mielnik at 1:16 into the bout.
Virginia’s match with UNC-Greensboro started similar to UVa’s match with Millersville in that the Cavaliers won the first five bouts of the dual, this time to jump out to a 23-0 lead. Virginia’s Sticca defeated Tony Stewart by the score of 9-7 at 125 before UVa’s Alexander picked-up a 10-4 decision over David Johnson at 133 to make the score 6-0. The Cavaliers’ Seidel earned a 20-3 technical fall win over Wes Gibson at 141 to give UVa a 11-0 lead before Virginia’s Bjorlo (149) and Foley (157) were each awarded wins by forfeit to make the score 23-0.
UNC-Greensboro won its first match of the dual in the 165 class when Keith Ritter recorded a 15-4 major decision victory over Conor Manley (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) ) to make the score 23-4. Virginia’s Muir the picked-up a forfeit win at 174 to make the score 29-4 before UNC-Greensboro’s Steve McClamrock posted a 13-4 major decision over Peter Kang (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) at 184 to make it a 29-8 contest. The Cavaliers’ Freday was awarded a forfeit win at 197 before UVa’s Etu picked up his second fall of the day by pinning John Kimble at 0:37 in the heavyweight class to make the final score, 41-8.
With the two wins, Virginia improves its overall record to 7-5 on the season. The Cavaliers will return to dual match action on Saturday, February 9th when UVa travels to Norfolk, Va. to face the Old Dominion Monarchs in a non-conference dual. Competition is scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM.
