Cavalier Women's Tennis Falls to Penn

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 32 Virginia women’s tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss Sunday to No. 54 Pennsylvania at Boar’s Head Sports Club. In a very competitive match were five of the six singles matches went three sets, the Quakers came away with the win in the six-hour match.
The Quakers took a 1-0 lead by sweeping the doubles point, including narrow 9-8 and 9-7 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively. In singles play, five of the six matches went three sets, but the Cavaliers were only able to post wins at No. 3 by Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) and at No. 4 by Kristen James (Clifton, Va.). The Loss drops the Cavaliers’ record to 4-2 on the season while Penn improves to 2-2.
“Today was a classic, very competitive college tennis match,” stated Virginia head coach Phil Rogers. “Give Penn credit for how they played and I was pleased with our play. Every match was hard fought and could have gone either way, and today it went Penn’s way.”
The Cavaliers will have nearly two weeks off before returning to action on February 22 as they visit Virginia Commonwealth.
