NORFOLK, Va. – The University of Virginia wrestling team won its fourth consecutive dual match and has now won seven of its last eight dual matches this season after recording a 34-13 victory over the Old Dominion Monarchs at the ODU Fieldhouse this afternoon. Virginia won seven of the ten bouts in the dual, including the fist four matches to jump out to a 19-0 lead, and never looked back as the Cavaliers cruised to a 21-point victory.

UVa’s Bob Seidel (Wall, N.J./Wall) got things started for the Cavaliers in the first match of the dual when he recorded his tenth fall of the season after pinning Charlie Busch just :40 into the match in the 141 class. Virginia’s Paul Bjorlo (Reston, Va./South Lakes) followed Seidel’s lead and recorded a fall of his own when he pinned Jon Stovich at 1:44 into the 149 match. The Cavaliers’ #13-ranked Tim Foley (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) picked up a 15-4 major decision victory over Rob Gosnell at 157 to give UVa a 16-0 lead through three matches. UVa’s Will Durkee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) then posted a 6-2 decision over Matt Ulrey at 165 to give Virginia a 19-0 advantage.

Old Dominion won back-to-back matches at 174 and 184 to cut UVa’s lead to 19-9, but the Cavaliers’ Andy DeMartino (McLean, Va./Jefferson) and Josh Etu (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) responded with back-to-back victories for the Cavaliers at 197 and in the heavyweight class, respectively. DeMartino posted a 1-1 overtime rideout over Greg Gill at 197 before Etu pinned Derrell Lorthridge just :31 into the heavyweight match. Etu’s pin was his third consecutive win by fall, with all three coming in a two-day period. UVa’s Ryan Stewart (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) was awarded a forfeit at 125 to give the Cavaliers’ their largest lead of the dual at 34-9 before the Monarchs picked up a win at 133 to end the match at 34-13.

With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 8-5 overall, while the loss drops Old Dominion’s record to 5-8 on the year. The Cavaliers will return to dual match action when UVa hosts a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference matches on Saturday, February 15th. Virginia will face the N.C. State Wolfpack at 1:00 PM before meeting the Duke Blue Devils at 7:00 PM. Both matches will be held at UVa’s Memorial Gymnasium.
