CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia Cavalier men’s tennis team beat Old Dominion 5-2, Friday night at Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers improve to 9-1 on the season, matching their best start in school history. Virginia also started the 2000 season with a 9-1 mark.

The Cavalier got ahead early by sweeping all three of their doubles matches. The Virginia team of Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) and Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach, Va.) won at No. 1 doubles over the No. 4 ranked team of Zoltan Csanadi and Izak van der Merwe. The Cavaliers’ wins were continued by the No. 2 team of Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Chris Gonyer (Louisville, Ky.) and the No. 3 team of Stephen Nolen (Aurora, Colo.) and Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.).

Virginia produced singles wins from Stewart at No. 1, who defeated No. 94 ranked van der Merwe. Also recording singles wins were Rizza at No. 3, Stephen Rozek (Chadron, Ohio) at No. 4, and Gonyer at No. 5. Four of the six matches went to three sets, three of which resulted in wins for the Cavaliers.

The Cavaliers travel to California over spring break to play UC-Irvine, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, and Pacific. They return to action at Boar’s Head on March 15th, 2003 with a double-header against Georgia Tech (noon) and UMBC (5:00pm).
