Virginia Rowers Successfully Open Spring Season

Charlottesville, VA – The University of Virginia women’s rowing team opened its 2003 spring season in successful fashion on Saturday (March 15) by winning every race in competition with Columbia University, San Diego State University and the University of Delaware at the Rivanna Reservoir.
During the morning competition, the Cavaliers won races in the novice eight, the second varsity eight, the varsity eight and the varsity four in competition with Columbia. In the afternoon, UVa defeated San Diego State in the second varsity eight and the varsity eight, and Delaware in the novice eight.
“I was pleased with our performances across the board today,” said Virginia head coach Kevin Sauer. “Columbia and Virginia have had limited water time this spring, but all the crews put in good races. Our rowing was not perfect, of course, but everyone competed very well. This is a good start to the season.”
Virginia’s first novice eight won the novice eight race against Columbia with a time of 7:32.0 followed by UVa’s second novice eight (7:44.7) and Columbia (7:50.4). The Cavaliers’ first novice eight crew was comprised of Lauren Cruickshank, Catherine Thrasher, Carrie Hatter, Lauren Frick, Monica Martinez, Katie Verhey, Christina Berry, Kim Maxfield and coxswain Kristina Caudle. Virginia’s second novice eight crew was made up of Bridget Barry, Emily Domenech, Mary Copland, Katie McDade, Alissa Rubin, Lexie Zaborowski, Christina Offutt, Anna Capetanakis and coxswain Janice Verbosky.
UVa’s second varsity eight won that competition with a time of 7:13.4 followed by the Cavaliers’ third varsity eight (7:32.0) and Columbia (7:48.7). Virginia’s secondvarsity eight crew was comprised of Amanda Kennedy, Katie Yrazabal, Crystal MacLeod, Margaret Matia, Kelley Jesnig, Mary Dobmeier, Claudia Durkin, Catelyn Coyle and coxswain Danielle Sewell. UVa’s third varsity eight crew was made up of Dawn Placek, Abby Lynch, Jenn Furstenau, Callie Spencer, Julie Creighton, Kelley Dougherty, Jessie Haury, Andrea Czarkowski and coxswain Karen Richardson.
The Cavaliers’ varsity eight won that competition with a time of 7:01.0 and Columbia had a time of 7:18.5. Virginia’s varsity eight was comprised of Genevieve Cauchon-Voyer, Beth Clark, Lindsay Shoop, Molly Baker, Julie McQueen, Jen Reck, Tammy Clark, Carolyn McMillan and coxswain Betty Shumaker.
UVa closed out the competition with Columbia with a victory in the varsity four race. The Cavaliers’ first varsity four won with a time of 7:59.1 followed by Virginia’s second varsity four (8:15.6) and Columbia (8:23.8). UVa’s first varsity four was made up of Julie Creighton, Kelley Dougherty, Jessie Haury, Andrea Czarkowski and coxswain Karen Richardson. The Cavaliers’ second varsity four was made up of Dawn Placek, Abby Lynch, Jenn Furstenau, Callie Spencer and coxswain Launa Forehand.
In the competition against San Diego State, Virginia’s second varsity eight won that race with a time of 7:15.8 followed by the Cavaliers’ third varsity eight (7:27.2) and San Diego State (7:44.4). Launa Forehand was the coxswain for the third varsity eight against San Diego State.
UVa’s varsity eight won that competition with a time of 7:02.2 and San Diego State finished in 7:32.4.
In the novice eight race against Delaware, Virginia’s first novice eight won with a time of 7:32.8 followed by Delaware (7:56.9) and UVa’s third novice eight (8:01.7).
“Today was a great day of racing for us,” UVa assistant coach Joel Furtek said. “All three of our varsity crews have something of which to be proud, and something to drive them forward this week and next as we prepare for the Stanford Invitational. Especially given the challenges of the weather this year, I’m very pleased with how our people raced. In particular, I thought the members of the third varsity eight did a great job of racing three times, including the varsity fours race, in just over four hours time.”
The Virginia women’s rowing team returns to action on March 29 with crews competing at Stanford and Georgetown.
