CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball team conducted its second contest of the “Orange vs. Blue World Series” at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium on Tuesday. In Game Two of the series, the Blue Team, coached by Virginia assistant coach Kevin McMullan, pulled out a 3-0 decision over the Orange Team, coached by UVa assistant coach Karl Kuhn, in a seven inning contest. The Blue squad scored two runs in the third inning and added another run in the fourth to take a two games to none lead in the best-of-three series. The Blue Team also won Game One of the series on Monday by the score of 3-2.

In Game Two of the series, the Blue Team broke a 0-0 tie in the bottom of the third inning when the first two batters of the inning reached base and came around to score a run. First-year CF Sean Slaughter (Virginia Beach, Va.) singled to start things off for the Blue Team before Matt Street (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) reached base after being hit by a pitch. Following a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Werman (Vienna, Va./James Madison) to move the baserunners ahead one base, Mark Reynolds (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) drove in Slaughter for the first run of the game with a RBI sacrifice fly to center field to make it a 1-0 contest. Reynolds’ hit and Slaughter’s run would prove to be the eventual game-winners. The Blue Team added to its one-run lead in its next at-bat when Joe Koshansky (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) drove in Street with a RBI-single to make the score 2-0 through three complete innings.

The Blue Team extended its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Slaughter reached base on an error and later scored the final run of the contest.

First-year LHP Alex Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry) picked up the win after going 5.0 scoreless innings and allowed just two hits. Third-year RHP Adam Laird (Bellaire, Texas/Bellaire) picked up the save after tossing 2.0 scoreless innings while surrendering two hits to go with one strikeout. The Orange Team’s Matt Avery (McLean, Va./Landon Prep) took the loss after going 5.0 innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits to go along with one strikeout.

With the victory, the Blue Team improves its record in the series to 2-0. The loss drops the Orange Team’s record to 0-2. The Blue Team now leads the series, 2-0. However, the Orange Team can still win the series if it wins Game Three by five or more runs.

The Blue and Orange squads will return to action on Wednesday, October 22nd for Game Three of the Orange vs. Blue World Series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium.
