CHARLOTTESVILLE – Two members of the Virginia men’s tennis team won a pair of matches Saturday to advance to the semifinals of the UVa Open at Boar’s Head Sports Club. Stephen Rozek (Chadron, Ohio) and Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) will look to capture the singles title on Sunday.

Stewart, the tournament’s No. 2 seed defeated Matt Stubbs of the Citadel and Damien Spizzo of Tennessee to reach the final. He will meet No. 3 seed Izak van der Merwe of Old Dominion in the semifinals. Van der Merwe defeated Virginia’s Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) in the quarterfinals. Rozek, the tournament’s No. 5 seed defeated Brad Pomeroy of North Carolina and teammate Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.) to reach the semifinals. He will meet tour pro Andrew Carlson, the tournament’s No. 1 seed, in the semifinals. Carlson defeated Virginia’s Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) in the quartefinals.

In doubles play, Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) teammed with Carlson to win a pair of matches to reach the semifinals.

Semifinals and Finals of both singles and doubles will be played Sunday at Boar’s Head Sports Club.
