CHARLOTTESVILLE – For the second consecutive game, the No. 7 seeded Virginia women’s soccer team tied a NCAA game and went to penalty kicks. However, this time the Cavaliers were defeated in the penalty kick shootout, as they fell to Villanova in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Kl?ckner Stadium after the game ended in a scoreless draw.

“We had all kinds of chances, but it wasn’t meant to be today,” stated Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “It is one thing if you get beat, but to lose like this is even tougher. The game was one-sided, but we had 110 minutes to put a ball in the net and we didn’t do it. You have to decide these games some way and by not taking advantage of our chances in regulation, we left ourselves in a position of having to go to a shootout.”

Virginia (12-5-4) had control throughout the contest, outshooting the Wildcats (15-5-4) 20-5 in the game. The Cavaliers hit two posts as Jamie Fabrizio’s (Carmel, Ind) blast from 20 yards struck iron in the first half, and Sarah Lane (Wheaton, Ill.) headed a ball off the post in the final ten seconds of the first overtime. Although the Cavaliers had a majority of the scoring chances, the game ended in a 0-0 tie and a penalty kick shootout would determine the team that advanced to the round of 16.

After both teams converted their first penalty kick, Villanova keeper Chrissy Dolan made a diving save on Gillian Hatch’s (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) attempt. Then, to start round four with Villanova leading 3-2, Dolan made another diving save on Katie Bunch’s (St. Louis, Mo.) attempt. Villanova’s Kelly Breslin then made her attempt to clinch the shootou

Fourth-year Virginia goalkeeper Anne Abernethy (Atlanta, Ga.) made two saves in recording the shutout. It was her 17th career shutout, which moved her into a tie with Sandy Kwitnieski for Virginia’s all-time lead in the category.

Villanova advances to the round of 16, where they will meet Brigham Young.
