“There are a lot of lessons to be learned from this game,” said Virginia head coach Debbie Ryan. “We hung with them in the first half. We have to be a little bit better. (Texas) is a very good team from top to bottom.”

In the first half, the teams traded baskets until the 10-minute mark when Texas jumped ahead by seven, 18-11. The Longhorns went on a 11-2 run and pulled ahead by as many as 19 points before leading at intermission, 41-22.

In the second half, Texas dominated, stretching its lead to as many as 29 points, 65-36.

Junior LaTonya Blue (Baltimore, Md.) paced the Cavs with a season-high 18 points. Junior Brandi Teamer (Joliet, Ill.) was the only other Cav in double digits.

“They definitely were a very physical team,” Teamer said of Texas. “Transition defense and turnovers were our biggest problems tonight.”

Texas had four players with double-figure scoring, led by Jamie Carey’s 20 points.

Overall, the Longhorns out-rebounded UVa, 34-31.
