BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Virginia women’s basketball team picked up its second road win on Friday with a 76-59 victory over Long Island.

Virginia improved to 3-3 overall, while the Blackbirds fell to 1-4.

“It was a good win,” said Virginia head coach Debbie Ryan. “We wanted to play all 13 players and give some of the younger players valuable playing time.”

In the first half, Virginia jumped out to an early lead, helped by senior Anna Prillaman’s (Midlothian, Va.) three-point shooting. UVa led by 12 at intermission, 44-32.

In the second half, the Cavaliers led by as many as 18 points, leading by double figures throughout the stanza.

Prillaman was the sole Cavalier in double-digit scoring, tying her career high of 22 points. She also nailed four three-point buckets. Senior Safiya Grant-Fairley (Bronx, N.Y.) and junior Kate Kreager (Oak Hill, Va.) added nine points apiece, while sophomore Deidra Chatman (Oakland, Calif.) and freshman Brenna McGuire (Winchester, Mass.) had eight points each.

“We wanted to get back on track,” Ryan said. “We talked about the things we needed to do to get better. We established an inside game tonight. Everybody was aggressive.”

Long Island had four players with double-figure scoring, led by Kelli Sawyer’s 17 points.

Overall, the Cavaliers out-rebounded the Blackbirds, 34-23.

Virginia will take a 13-day break for final exams before traveling to Philadelphia to face St. Joseph’s on Thursday, Dec. 18. All of the Cavaliers’ games can be heard on WINA Radio (1070 AM) and on the Virginia website at www.VirginiaSports.com (click on the game schedule).
