Charlottesville, Va. – Sophomore attackman Brian Crockett scored a career-high six goals to lift #3 Syracuse to an 18-12 win over Virginia this afternoon at Kl?ckner Stadium.

The loss is the third in a row for UVa, its longest losing streak in three years, as the Cavaliers fall to 1-3 this season. Syracuse, winners of nine of the last 11 meetings between the two teams, moves to 2-0.

Michael Powell, shutout by the Cavaliers last season, and Steve Vallone each tallied three times for the Orangemen.

Crockett put the visiting Orangemen on the board just 34 seconds into the game and Powell scored 48 seconds later to build an early 2-0 lead before the Cavaliers even had a possession.

Sophomore Matt Ward knotted the score with two quick goals as the game was going at a pace faster than a goal a minute.

Longstick midfielder John Gallagher answered Ward’s pair with this first career goal to put SU ahead 3-2 to maintain the goal-a-minute pace.

Midfielder Matt Poskay scored an extra-man goal to start a three-goal run that saw the Cavaliers grab a 5-3 lead early in the second quarter.

The Orangemen countered with four goals of their own, including two by Vallone, to take a 7-6 lead at halftime.

The visitors from upstate New York opened the second half much like the first by scoring on four of their first six shots to push the lead to 12-7.

Joe Yevoli scored back-to-back goals midway through the third quarter to trim the deficit to three (12-9), but the Cavaliers were unable to get any closer the rest of the way.

Ward led the Cavaliers with a career-high seven points, including three goals. Yevoli had his most productive day of the season with three goals and a pair of assists.

Attackman John Christmas, who scored the game-winner in last season’s victory over Syracuse, did not play in the game due to a lingering groin injury.

Virginia returns to action at home next Saturday against Princeton at 1 pm.
