Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. – The #25 ranked University of Virginia baseball team cruised to a 9-2 victory over the N.C. State Wolfpack at Doak Field in the first contest of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series. The Cavaliers’ Andrew Dobies pitched a complete game and allowed just two runs in the second inning and UVa scored nine runs on 11 hits en-route to a seven-run victory. Dobies struck out a game-high nine batters with no walks.

Virginia wasted no time and took a 4-0 lead in the top off the first inning when the first four Cavaliers that stepped to the plate reached base and scored a run. After Matt Street led off the game with a single and Mark Reynolds walked, Ryan Zimmerman made it a 1-0 game with a RBI-single to right-center field. One batter later, UVa’s Joe Koshansky drove in two runs to make it a 3-0 ball game with a two-run triple to right-center field. Koshansky scored a run himself one batter on a RBI ground-out to short stop by Matt Dunn to give Virginia a 4-0 advantage. The Cavaliers’ four, first inning runs would prove to be all it needed to record the win.

N.C. State cut UVa’s lead in half at 4-2 in the bottom of the second inning when Joey Devine singled and scored a run one batter later on a RBI-double down the left field line by Marc Maynor. Maynor advanced to third base on the throw to home plate on Devine and scored a run himself in NCSU’s next at-bat on sacrifice bunt by Jake Muyco.

The Cavaliers added a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning and made the score 6-2 when Street dropped in a two-run, RBI-double to left-center field with the bases loaded. Street’s double was nearly caught by a diving Jason St. Julien (NCSU left fielder), but fell in for a hit and scored Josh Darby and Scott Headd who each singled to reach base.

UVa extended its lead to 9-2 in the top of the seventh inning by scoring three more runs after a RBI-single up the middle by Zimmerman to drive in Reynolds before Headd drove in a pair of runs with a two-run, RBI double to left-center field to plate both Zimmerman and Darby.

UVa’s Dobies (4-0) picked up his fourth win of the season and remained perfect on the mound after allowing just two runs on eight hits while striking out nine batters.

N.C. State starting pitcher Michael Rogers (4-1) lasted just 5.0 innings and allowed six runs on eight hits to go along with three strikeouts after suffering his first loss of the year.

With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 20-5 overall, 5-2 in the ACC. The loss drops N.C. State’s record to 15-8 overall, 1-3 in the ACC. UVa takes a one game to none lead in the series.

The Cavaliers and Wolfpack will return to action on Saturday, March 27th when UVa and N.C. State play the second contest of the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM at Doak Field.
