The Virginia women’s lacrosse team (8-2) again held the opponent to two or less 8-meters, and Andrea Pfeiffer made saves on both shots en route to an 8-save performance as the Cavaliers defeated Temple 19-5 Saturday (Mar. 27) in Charlottesville. Molly Urlock had three caused turnovers and two ground balls while Kim Connors had four draw controls to lead Virginia. Tyler Leachman led the Cavaliers offensively with five goals and an assist while Amy Appelt notched her tenth consecutive hat trick (3 goals in a game) and added two assists. Virginia won 20 draws while allowing Temple only six, including a 12-3 advantage in the first half that saw the Hoos lead 12-2 at the break.

The Owls won the first draw of the game but Ashley Dodson caused a turnover in the arc and scooped up the ground ball to start the transition to the other end. Virginia hit the pipe and had two shots that were saved in the first possession, but as Temple tried to clear the ball, Caitlin Banks picked up an overthrow and fed Courtney Young, who was cutting down the arc. Young scored, putting the Cavaliers on the board at 6:57. Virginia won the ball but a turnover in the Cavaliers’ defensive zone as they were trying to advance the ball gave the ball to Temple. Megan Condon picked up the loose ball and took it in uncontested to the cage where she scored 17 seconds after Young to tie the game at 1-1.

Pfeiffer made a save on Temple’s next possession and Elizabeth Pinney scooped up the ground ball. Pinney passed the ball up to Kim Connors, who took the ball up and fed Banks at the restraining line. Banks took the ball to the cage and scored to give Virginia a lead they would not relinquish. Connors won the ensuing draw and Virginia took the ball upfield where a Cavalier shot was saved by Temple’s Megan McLouth. A Temple goal circle violation gave the Cavaliers the ball at the top of the fan, and from there Young fed Leachman, who was cutting down the arc. Leachman’s goal came one minute after Banks’ goal and gave the Hoos a 3-1 lead. Ashleigh Haas won the draw control and Virginia worked the ball behind where Appelt fed Young on the other side of the cage. Young converted the pass and scored 46 seconds after assisting Leachman. Dodson won the next draw and the Hoos got the ball in the offensive zone where Leachman drove to the cage but was fouled on the way in. She scored off the 8-meter 29 seconds after Young to put the Cavaliers up 5-1.

Urlock notched one of her caused turnovers in the defensive arc on Temple’s next possession and at the other end of the field Banks fed Breslin, who was cutting across the arc. Breslin’s goal put the Cavaliers up by five 12:56 into the game. Connors won another draw and Virginia worked the ball upfield where Leachman drove to the cage asking for the ball. She was fouled by McLouth as she caught it and drew an 8-meter with McClouth behind her on the 12. Leachman deposited the ball in the empty net and scored her third goal of the game at the midway point of the first half. Temple scored five minutes later to break the 6-0 run as Condon fed Allison Frengs from behind, pulling the Owls to 7-2.

Appelt then scored three goals in a span of 69 seconds, starting with a ground ball pick up by Jess Wasilewski in the midfield. In the Cavaliers offensive zone, Appelt drew a shooting space foul and converted the 8-meter 23:35 into the game. Urlock won the ensuing draw and Appelt took the ball at the top of the fan and rolled the crease for her second goal 54 seconds after her first goal. Nikki Lieb won the next draw and passed it to Banks, who fed Appelt who was streaking through the crease. Appelt scored 15 seconds after her second goal to put Virginia up 10-2. Connors won another draw and got the ball to Morgan Thalenberg, who took the ball behind the cage and fed Leachman who was cutting down the opposite side. Leachman notched her fourth goal of the half 63 seconds after Appelt’s goal. On Temple’s next possession, an errant throw was picked up by Pfieffer, who started the transition forward. In the Virginia offense, Breslin fed Megan Havrilla, who converted the pass for a goal and giving the Cavaliers a 10-goal lead with 1:55 to play in the first half.

Banks won the opening draw of the second half and Virginia worked the ball upfield where they set their offense. Connors took the ball behind and attempted a pass through the goal circle but it was knocked down by the Temple goalie. The ball fell to her feet and she inadvertantly kicked the ball into the net, giving a goal to the Cavaliers. Lieb picked up an overthrown ball by Temple on the Owls’ next possession and got the ball to Appelt. Appelt passed the ball to Wasilewski, who took the ball in from the top of the fan, eluded a pair of defenders, and scored to give Virginia a 14-2 lead. Temple broke the 7-0 run as Condon notched her second assist of the day with a feed from behind to Johna Capaldo at the 42:31 mark. A Temple goal circle violation gave the ball to Pfeiffer, who started a fast break that saw the ball go to Wasilewski to Leachman to Breslin, who was on the crease and threw in the Leachman pass for a goal. The Cavaliers tried another fast break but the shot was wide, and on the reset, Haas fed Thalenberg who was cutting down the left side of the arc. Thalenberg scored to put Virginia up 16-3. Appelt won the draw and took the ball down to the cage, drawing a double team. She dumped the ball to Leachman, who scored her fifth goal of the game to give the Hoos a 17-3 lead. Temple answered as Capaldo threw the ball ahead to Casey Cech, who scored two minutes after Leachman.

Laura Burns won the ensuing draw control and Virginia took the ball upfield, where Haas took a feed on the side of the cage and split a pair of defenders before scoring. Temple gained possession and took the ball to their offensive zone where a Tiffany Pulaski shot was saved by Ginger Miles, who had come on for Pfeiffer at the 50:00 mark of the game. Miles tossed the ball to Lauren Keller, who passed the ball upfield to Julie Hauser, who dumped the ball into Carol Hotarek who was in the arc. Hotarek scored at 57:15 to give UVa a 19-4 lead. Pulaski closed out the scoring with a goal 39 seconds later for the final score of 19-5.

Appelt has now notched 10 consecutive hat tricks and has 43 goals and 16 assists on the year for 59 points. She ranks fourth all-time for scoring as a third-year, third all-time for goals as third-year, and tenth in assists as a third-year. She needs just nine points to move into third all-time in career points. Andrea Pfeiffer moved into that third spot today with eight saves as she now has 442 saves, passing All-American Tracy Nelson. Next up is current Virginia coach Heather Dow who had 474 during her stellar career.

The Cavaliers close out their five-game homestand with a game against in-state rival James Madison on Wednesday, March 31. Game time is 7:00 pm
