RALEIGH, NC – The No. 54 ranked Virginia women’s tennis team fell in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament to No. 5 ranked Duke 4-0 Friday afternoon at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center. The No. 7 seeded Cavaliers fall to 11-12 on the season, while the No. 2 seeded Blue Devils advanced to play the winner of Florida State and Wake Forest in Saturday’s semifinals.

The Blue Devils took control early by taking the doubles point. Tory Zawacki and Julia Smith defeated Mariko Fritz-Krockow (Fairfax, Va.) and Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) at No. 1 and Amanda Johnson and Saras Arasu defeated Dora Bechliwanis (Etobicoke, Ont.) and Lauren Bruch (Lake Forest, Ill.) at No. 2 to clinch the point.

Duke then clinched the dual match by winning the first three singles matches completed. Johnson, ranked No. 7 nationally, defeated James at No. 1 to extend Duke’s lead to 2-0. Minutes later, the lead became 3-0 when Zawacki defeated Marta Bechliwanis (Etobicoke, Ont.) at No. 3. Kristen Cargill clinched the match for Duke with her win over Shannon Stough (Hot Springs, Ark.) at No. 6. The other three matches went unfinished.

“We played hard today but it wasn’t our best match of the season,” said head coach Phil Rogers. “Obviously Duke had a lot to do with that. This has been a great team to coach and I was proud of how we fought back from some adversity this season.”
