Refuse To Lose Cavaliers Rally Yet Again As #23 Virginia Tops Maryland 2-1 in 11 Innings

BOWIE, Md. – The University of Virginia baseball team won its 12th consecutive game and swept its third consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference series by claiming a 2-1 comeback win over the Maryland Terrapins in 11 innings in the third and final contest of a three-game ACC series at Prince George’s Stadium. Trailing 1-0 in the top of the ninth inning, the Cavaliers scored a run to tie the game to force extra innings before scoring the game-winning run in the top of the 11th inning. It was UVa’s second consecutive 11-inning win over Maryland and the Cavaliers’ second come-from-behind victory over the Terrapins in three games.
Maryland scored the first run of the game and took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after Brian Jarosinski sent a solo home run deep over the left field wall. The game would remain 1-0 in favor of the Terrapins until the top of the ninth inning. That’s when, as they’ve done all season long, the Cavaliers responded with their backs to the wall. With one out and Matt Dunn on first base after a fielder’s choice, Tom Hagan laced a RBI-double down the left field line to drive in UVa’s first run to tie the contest at 1-1.
In the top of the 11th inning with two outs and a runner on third base, Tim Henry slipped a RBI-single through the left side to score Hagan for the go-ahead run, giving UVa a 2-1 lead it would not relinquish.
UVa’s Shooter Starr (2-0) picked up the win after going 1.0 inning and allowed no runs on one hit. UVa starting pitcher Joe Koshansky went 9.0 innings and allowed just one run on five hits and struck out a game-high nine batters in a no-decision.
The Terrapins’ Ben Pfinsgraff (3-2) was dealt the loss after allowing one run on three hits in 2.2 innings of action. Maryland starting pitcher Kevin Hart went 8.1 innings and surrendered one run on five hits and struck out eight batters in a no-decision.
With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 32-7 overall, 14-4 in the ACC. The loss drops Maryland’s record to 16-21 overall, 2-13 in the conference. The Cavaliers swept the three-game series three games to none and have now won 12 of the last 13 games against the Terrapins.
The Cavaliers will return to home action on Tuesday, April 20th when Virginia hosts Norfolk State in a non-conference game. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium.
