CHARLOTTESVILLE – The University of Virginia women’s rowing team returns to action this weekend (May 15-16) at the Central/South Region Sprints in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Preliminary competition is scheduled for Saturday (May 15) and the finals for Sunday (May 16) on Melton Hill Lake.

Virginia crews will compete in the first varsity eight, the second varsity eight, the first varsity four, the second varsity four, the first novice eight and the second novice eight at the Central/South Region Sprints. The Cavaliers have not competed since rowing against Dartmouth, Pennsylvania and Princeton in Princeton, N.J., on April 24.

UVa won the South Region Championship and finished second overall at last year’s Central/South Region Sprints. The Cavaliers won championships in both the first varsity eight and the first novice eight competitions last year. Virginia also finished second in the second novice eight, fourth in the second varsity eight and seventh in the first varsity four a year ago.

Virginia’s participation in last year’s Central/South Region Sprints marked the first time the Cavaliers had participated in the regatta since 1998. The Cavaliers won the team competition at the Central/South Region Sprints in 1998 and 1997.

UVa’s first varsity eight crew is currently ranked seventh in the nation in the latest Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/USRowing NCAA Division I Coaches Poll.
