Virginia's Matt Avery Listed A Cape Cod League Top-30 Prospect By Baseball America

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia baseball player Matt Avery (McLean, Va.,/Landon Prep) was named one of the top Cape Cod League prospects by Baseball America following his solid pitching performances this past summer. Avery, a third-year RHP at UVa, was listed as the 27th top prospect by Baseball America from the Cape Cod League this summer while he served as a starting pitcher with the Brewster Whitecaps.

Avery started all six games he appeared in with the Brewster Whitecaps and posted a record of 4-1 with a 1.99 ERA. He pitched 31.2 innings and struck out 22 batters for the Whitecaps.

Last year at Virginia (the 2004 collegiate baseball season), Avery solidified himself in UVa’s starting weekend rotation and became one of the Cavaliers’ top pitchers on the staff. He started 14 of the 16 games he appeared in while posting a 7-2 record with a 3.22 ERA for the Cavaliers. Avery pitched two complete games, including one shutout, through 86.2 innings of work. He also struck out 51 batters while holding opposing hitters to a .265 batting average. Avery was named the ACC Pitcher of the Week on April 12, 2004.
