CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (31-29, 30-22, 30-22) loss to Atlantic Coast Conference regular season champion Georgia Tech Saturday afternoon (November 13) at Memorial Gym. With the loss, the Cavaliers end the regular season with an 18-10 overall record and an 8-8 mark in the ACC. Georgia Tech ran its winning streak to 21 consecutive matches and improves to 23-5 overall and 16-0 in the ACC.

Second-year setter Emily Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla./Plant) recorded a double-double with 43 assists and 12 digs to lead the Cavaliers. First-year outside hitter Sarah Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla./Plant) led UVa in kills with 15 ands also tallied seven digs and two block assists, while fourth-year middle Alexis Geocaris (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) added 10 kills and a team-high four block assists. Second-year outside hitter Lindsay Osco (Houston, Texas/Elkins) contributed seven kills and eight digs with third-year outside hitter Kristin Chaney (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) and first-year middle Katie Oakes (Lorton, Va./Evangel Christian School) both adding five kills and two block assists. Chaney also added a pair of service aces. First-year libero Melissa Caldwell (Houston, Texas/Stratford) led UVa’s defensive effort with 20 digs.

Lynnette Moster paced the Yellow Jackets with 18 kills while hitting .405 and added 12 digs for a double-double. Lauren Sauer notched 15 kills, while Ulrike Stegemann hit .667 with 13 kills. Setter Lindsey Laband also posted a double-double with 49 assists and 10 digs. Jayme Gergen registered a match-best eight blocks and also contributed eight kills to Georgia Tech’s offense.

The Yellow Jackets hit an impressive .321 as a team with 61 kills and just 17 errors. Virginia hit only .169 in the match with 46 kills. Georgia Tech also held a 71-52 advantage in digs and a 10-6 edge in team blocks. UVa held a slight 4-3 margin in service aces.

Virginia now awaits the announcement of the seedings for 2004 ACC Championship, which will take place Thursday, November 18 through Sunday, November 21 at Memorial Gym. Seedings for the tournament will be announced on Monday, November 15.
