CHARLOTTESVILLE – The University of Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams posted victories over the University of South Carolina Saturday (Nov. 20) at UVa’s Aquatic & Fitness Center. The 10th-ranked Cavalier men won eight swimming events in registering a 126-93 victory. The 14th-ranked Virginia women also won eight swimming events in defeating South Carolina 125-111. The UVa men are now 4-0 overall and the Virginia women are 5-0.

Third-year Rachael Burke (Bethesda, Md./Good Counsel) and first-year Jess Lewis (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) each won two events for the UVa women. Burke won the 500 (4:55.42) and 1000 freestyle (9:49.57) events, while Lewis won the 50 (23.87) and 100 freestyle (51.56) events.

Also winning individual events for Virginia were second-year Katy Bland (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville) in the 200 freestyle (1:49.70), second-year Erin Corgan (Marietta, Ga./Marist) in the 400 individual medley (4:21.74) and third-year Katie Gordon (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) in the 200 backstroke (2:01.72). The UVa 400 medley relay team comprised of third-year Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School), second-year Jenny Steiner (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence), first-year Stephanie Glover (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) and Bland won that event with a time of 3:49.63.

Fourth-years Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) and Bo Greenwood (Manakin, Va./Goochland) each won two events for the Virginia men. Anderson won the 100 (44.55) and 200 freestyle (1:38.49), while Greenwood won the 400 individual medley (3:56.41) and the 200 backstroke (1:48.25).

Also winning individual events for the UVa men were third-year Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./Germantown Academy) in the 1000 freestyle (9:03.72), fourth-year Michael Rabb (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) in the 200 butterfly (1:48.69) and first-year Matt Targett (Victoria Australia/Scotch College) in the 50 freestyle (20.34). The Virginia 400 medley relay team comprised of second-year Greg Imboden (Chattanooga, Tenn./McCallie), first-year P.J. Sullivan (Franklin, Mass/Bishop Feehan), fourth-year Chris Cooper (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) and fourth-year Brian Harrington (Alexandria, Va./Mount Vernon) won that event with a time of 3:27.99.

Lauren King won both the one-meter (307.87) and three-meter (309.90) diving competitions for the South Carolina women.

The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams return to action on December 4 at the University of Pittsburgh.
