CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Virginia softball team rebounded from a pair of tough losses Friday to register victories over Radford and Temple Saturday (February 12) at the Triangle Classic. UVa downed Radford 4-2 and then posted a 3-2 eight-inning victory over Temple to improve to 2-2 on the season. First-year pitcher Whitney Holstun (Escondido, Calif./Escondido) recorded both wins in the circle for the Cavaliers.

Holstun pitched a complete-game in Virginia’s 4-2 win over Radford. She allowed only one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks for her first collegiate victory. In the 3-2 win over Temple, Holstun pitched the final two and two-thirds innings and struck out six of the nine batters she faced to pick up the win. She entered the game with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth and got out of the jam by striking out the next two batters.

In the 4-2 win over Radford, first-year right fielder Kathryn Mirras (Montauk, N.Y./East Hampton) went 3-3 and scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the seventh inning. Third-year center fielder Jessica Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Academy) and fourth-year catcher Jenn Wynn (Herndon, Va./Herndon) both had a pair of hits. Third-year third baseman Sara Larquier (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) drove in two runs in the seventh inning with a single.

UVa took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Wynn’s RBI double that scored Taylor. Radford tied the game at 1-1 with an unearned run in the bottom of the second. The Cavaliers took the lead for good in the sixth when Wynn scored from first on second-year first baseman Brooke Sorber’s (Alexandria, Va./Mount Vernon) double. Larquier extended the lead to 4-1 with a two-run single in the seventh. The Highlanders scored one run in the bottom of the seventh to make the final score 4-2.

The Cavaliers needed eight innings to defeat Temple 3-2. The Owls grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, but UVa answered with a pair of runs for a 2-1 edge. Virginia used a pair of hit batters, three errors and a passed ball to tally the two unearned runs. Third-year right fielder Jackie Greer (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern) scored on a passed ball and second-year second baseman Elea Crockett (Tucson, Ariz./University) scored on an error. Temple tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth on a RBI single by Amanda Carver.

The game went into the eighth inning tied at 2-2 and UVa held Temple scoreless in the top half of the eighth. In the bottom of the inning, Greer was placed on second in accordance with the international tie-breaker rule. Greer moved to third on Crockett’s fielder’s choice sacrifice bunt and scored the game-winning run on Taylor’s single. It was Taylor’s fourth hit of the afternoon.

Third-year Erin Horn (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon) started in the circle for the Cavaliers and allowed two earned runs on three hits in 4.1 innings of work. She struck out three batters and walked seven.

Virginia concludes play in the Triangle Classic on Sunday (February 13) with a 1:00 p.m. contest against host North Carolina.
