CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s tennis team heads to Chicago this week to compete in the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships at the Mid-Town Tennis Club. The No. 9 ranked Cavaliers are making their first appearance at the prestigious event, which annually features the top teams in the nation.

The Cavaliers (5-0) open play Thursday with a first-round match-up with No. 7 Stanford (6-0), set to start at noon (CT). It will be the first ever-meeting between the Cavaliers and the Cardinal. Stanford is no stranger to the event, having won it a record 12 times. The winner of the match will take on the winner of the UCLA/Oklahoma State match in Friday’s quarterfinal round.

In addition to the Cavaliers and Cardinal, this year’s field is highlighted by No. 1 ranked and defending NCAA Champion Baylor, No. 2 ranked UCLA, and No. 3 ranked and defending ITA National Indoor Champion, Illinois. No. 4 Georgia, No. 5 Florida, No. 6 Ole Miss, No. 8 Duke, No. 11 LSU, No. 12 Southern California, No. 13 Kentucky, No. 15 Ohio State, No. 30 Oklahoma State, No. 31 Harvard, and No. 44 Boise State round out the field. Nine times the winner of the ITA National Indoor Championship has gone on to win the NCAA Championship later that season.

“We are excited to get a chance to play at National Indoors this year,” says Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “We are looking forward to a great opportunity for us to test ourselves against the top teams in the nation.”

The Cavaliers have opened the season with five consecutive wins over ranked opponents at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. Last weekend, Virginia scored wins over No. 36 Alabama and No. 70 Indiana.

The 16-team event runs from Thursday-Sunday at the Mid-Town Tennis Club in Chicago. For more information, including ticket information, visit www.nationalteamindoors.com.
