Cavalier Men's Tennis Downs Georgia Tech 6-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The second ranked Virginia men’s tennis team remained undefeated in the ACC as it topped No. 50 Georgia Tech 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the Snyder Tennis Center. The win was the Cavaliers’ 11th consecutive home win and improves their overall record to 14-2 on the season.
The Cavaliers opened the match strong, sweeping the doubles matches from the Yellow Jackets (7-6, 1-3). Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) and Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) posted an 8-3 win over Scott Blackmon and Zachary Rath at No. 3 doubles, The No. 44 ranked team of Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) then clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 win over Jose Muguruza and Sukhwa Young at No. 2 doubles. The No. 29 ranked team of Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.) completed the sweep with their 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles against David North and Marko Rajevic.
In singles, the Cavaliers quickly extended their lead to 3-0 with a pair of quick wins. Cohen captured the first singles win for Virginia as he topped George Gvelesiani 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. Huey then completed a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles over Rath. Georgia Tech cut into the lead when No. 20 ranked Muguruza upset No. 8 ranked Stewart in three sets at No. 1 singles. Devvarman then clinched the match for the Cavaliers as he completed a three-set win over Rajevic at No. 3 singles. Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) also won in three sets for Virginia, at No. 5 singles, as he topped Jordan Delass. Rizza closed out the match as he defeated North in three sets at No. 2 singles.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Friday, March 25 as they visit NC State.
