Virginia Rowers Participate In Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic and George Washington Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia women’s rowing team competes on both coasts of the country this weekend (April 9-10). The Cavaliers’ first and second varsity eight boats will participate in the third annual Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic in Redwood Shores, Calif., on Saturday (April 9) and Sunday (April 10). The varsity four and novice eight crews will race in the George Washington Invitational in Washington, D.C. on Saturday.
The Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic is a two-day regatta featuring races between 17 of the nation’s top universities as well as nearly 400 Bay Area and high school rowers. UVa’s first and second varsity eight boats will compete against Washington and UCLA on Saturday, and against California on Sunday. The Henley style racing begins at 9:00 a.m. each day (Pacific time). Virginia’s varsity eight will race at 9:16 a.m. and 3:34 p.m. on Saturday and at 10:18 a.m. on Sunday. The second varsity eight will compete at 10:20 a.m. and 4:38 p.m on Saturday and at 9:16 a.m. on Sunday. Complete race results will be posted at www.jamcotimes.com/2005/windermere/index.htm.
Virginia’s first varsity eight is ranked ninth in the nation by the USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Poll. California is ranked fifth in the poll. Washington and UCLA claim the 11th and 13th spots, respectively.
The Virginia rowers comprising the varsity eight boat include coxswain Katie Hilton, Carolyn McMillan, Ashley Jones, Beth Clark, Mary Dobmeier, Margaret Matia, Kerry Maher, Yvonne Epp, and Melanie Kok. The women in the second varsity eight boat are coxswain Launa Forehand, Catelyn Coyle, Crystal MacLeod, Libby McCann, Andria Haneman, Heather Gardner, Sara Lippa, Katie Yrazabal, and Chrissie Monaghan.
Virginia’s varsity four and novice eight boats travel to Washington, D.C. on Saturday to participate in the 18th annual George Washington Invitational Crew Classic. The event is the largest collegiate rowing competition in the Washington metropolitan area. Over 400 rowers will compete in a variety of races on the 2,000 meter, four-lane buoyed course. The regatta is held on the Potomac River and will begin at 9:00 a.m. Races can best be viewed from Washington Harbour at 3000 K Street, NW. The regatta is part of the 2005 National Cherry Blossom Festival. Admission is free.
UVa’s varsity four boat is comprised of coxswain Michelle Ellison, Mindy Fiesler, Mieke Pitts, Allison Brennan, and Kim Southern. Rowers in the novice eight boat include coxswain Caitlin Mixter, Vicki Moore, Katrin Sydlik, Anna Samaha, Diane Leigh, Jenn Furstenau, Sarah Blair, Lauren Fluhart, and Abby Lynch.
