TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – The University of Virginia women’s soccer team opened their 2005 preseason schedule Tuesday night as it fell 2-1 to Michigan at the Keystone Road Soccer Complex in Traverse City, Mich.

The game was played with four 30-minute periods. The game remained scoreless until the second period when Kristen Weiss (Brecksville, Ohio) scored on an assist from Jess Rostedt (Kent, Ohio) to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead. Virginia held that lead until the fourth period when the Wolverines scored twice to win the game.

“I think this was a great game for us at this point of the preseason,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “Every one of our players got to play 60 minutes against a quality opponent and we were able to learn a lot about our team.”

The Cavaliers will conclude their preseason exhibition schedule on Thursday, August 18 as they meet defending NCAA Champion Notre Dame in Fort Wayne, Ind. The game is part of the IPFW Soccer Showcase and will begin at 8:00 p.m. Virginia opens the 2005 regular season on Friday, August 26 as Rhode Island visits Klockner Stadium. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
