FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The University of Virginia women’s soccer team concluded its preseason schedule Thursday night with a 2-0 loss to defending NCAA Champion Notre Dame in Fort Wayne, Ind. The game was part of the IPFW Soccer Showcase and a crowd of 3,470 saw the battle between two top-five squads.

The Fighting Irish took the lead the in the 20th minute when Katie Thorlakson scored on an assist from Kerri Hanks. Notre Dame added a second goal in the 86th minute as Susan Pinnick tallied an unassisted goal.

The teams each had seven shots and four corner kicks in the contest. Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) made four saves for the Cavaliers, while Erika Bohn made three saves for Notre Dame.

“Tonight was a great atmosphere for soccer, it felt more like an NCAA game than a preseason game,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “It was a good opportunity for us to see a lot of things. We did some things well and there are some things we need to work on. I am excited about this season because I think this team has a lot of potential.”

Virginia opens the 2005 regular season on Friday, August 26 as Rhode Island visits Klockner Stadium. Game time is 7:00 p.m. On Sunday, August 21, the Cavalier women’s and men’s soccer teams will have Meet the Team Day at the Barracks Road Shopping Center from 1-3 p.m.
