CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 5 ranked University of Virginia women’s soccer team opened the 2005 season by defeating Rhode Island 6-0 in front of 967 fans at Klockner Stadium. The Cavaliers displayed a balanced attack as six different players scored and eight different players recorded a point.
Virginia opened the game strong and took the lead in 14th minute. Sarah Huffman (Flower Mound, Texas) was fouled in the area and fellow fourth-year Kelly Hammond (Bowie, Md.) converted the penalty kick to give UVa the lead. Three minutes later, the Cavaliers struck again as first-year Jess Rostedt (Kent, Ohio) scored on an assist from Kristen Weiss (Brecksville, Ohio). In the 21st minute, Huffman blasted home a loose ball in the area after a Weiss cross had been deflected off of Rostedt to her. Just before halftime, the Cavaliers added another goal, as first-year Kelly Quinn (Dublin, Ohio) scored after being set up by Noelle Keselica (Gaithersburg, Md.) and Hammond.
In the second half, the Cavaliers scored three minutes after the break as a loose ball was gathered by Sarah Curtis (Yellow Springs, Ohio) and sent into the net from 15-yards out. The Cavaliers closed out the scoring in the 69th minute when Ariel Thompson (Salem, Va.) knocked in a cross from Curtis.
Overall, Virginia outshot Rhode Island 31-0 in the contest and had a 8-0 edge in corner kicks. Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) and Celeste Miles (Garland, Texas) combined for the shutout for the Cavaliers while Ria Carroll made ten saves in net for the Rams.
“I thought we did some good things tonight,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “To have six different goal scorers shows the depth we have in the attack. That depth is one of our strengths, and we used it, and our athleticism, to our advantage tonight.”
The Cavaliers return to action on Sunday, August 28, when they host No. 15 West Virginia. Game time at Klockner Stadium is 2:00 p.m.
