GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Virginia fourth-year swimmer Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./Germantown Academy) has been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week as announced Monday (November 7). Crippen captured the honor for the second time this season and the ninth time in his career after winning two individual events in War Memorial Pool record times in UVa’s 134-102 win over Virginia Tech on November 2.

Crippen swept the 500 and 1000 freestyles in helping lead UVa to the victory over the Hokies. He won the 1000 free with a War Memorial Pool record time of 9:11.61, more than 14 seconds faster than the previous pool record and 23 seconds quicker than the second-place finisher. During the 1000 free, Crippen also bettered the War Memorial Pool record in the 500 free with his split of 4:31.45. In the 500 free, Crippen bettered his brand new pool record with a winning time of 4:29.64. Crippen closed out the meet by swimming a leg on the Cavaliers’ 400 freestyle relay that touched first with a time of 3:07.13.

Crippen is an 11-time All-American and six-time ACC champion. He was named the ACC Men’s Swimmer of the Year in 2003 and 2004 and also garnered ACC Men’s Freshman of the Year honors in 2003.

The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams return to action on Friday and Saturday, November 11-12 when they host several nationally-ranked teams at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. Friday’s swimming competition gets under way at 6:00 p.m. with one and three-meter diving starting at 1:00 p.m. Competition on Saturday begins at 11:00 a.m. The 17th-ranked UVa men host top-ranked and defending NCAA champion Auburn, 14th-ranked Purdue and 23rd-ranked Penn State. The 18th-ranked Cavalier women host second-ranked and 2005 NCAA runners-up Auburn and 12th-ranked Penn State.
