CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s soccer team will open the 2005 NCAA Tournament at home after the field of 64 was announced Monday evening. The Cavaliers will open the tournament with a first round game against Liberty on Friday night at Klockner Stadium, while Tennessee and Wake Forest meet in the other first round game in Charlottesville.

The Cavaliers are the No. 2 seed in the Upper Right Quadrant of the draw after posting a 15-5-1 record. Virginia finished second in the ACC with an 8-2-0 conference mark and reached the final of last week’s ACC Tournament. Liberty (12-6-2) enters the tournament as the champions of the Big South Conference. The Flames and Cavaliers met once before in the NCAA Tournament, in the first round of the 2001 Tournament, a game Virginia won 3-0.

Tennessee (14-5-2) is the champion of the SEC, while Wake Forest received an at-large bid after a 9-8-1 season. The Cavaliers played both teams during the regular season. On September 9, the Lady Vols scored with 11 seconds remaining to defeat the Cavaliers 1-0 at Klockner Stadium. Virginia defeated Wake Forest twice this season, downing the Deacons 1-0 in Winston-Salem on September 22 and defeating them 2-1 last Wednesday in the ACC quarterfinals.

“The biggest thing about the draw is to see if you are at home,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “We are confident playing at Klockner and will be ready to play on Friday. We feel that the schedule we have played this season has prepared us well for the NCAA Tournament.”

The NCAA Tournament bid is the Cavaliers’ 12th consecutive appearance, and 18th overall appearance. This season also marks the third consecutive season that the Cavaliers will host play during the first round of the tournament.
