Today’s Game: The Cavaliers host NCAA First Round action for the third consecutive season when they play Liberty Friday night. Virginia is the No. 2 seed in the “Upper Right Quadrant” of the bracket. The Cavaliers received an at-large bid after a 15-5-1 season in which they reached the finals of the ACC Tournament. Liberty (12-6-2) enters the tournament as the Big South Champions and are on a seven-game win streak after winning the Big South Tournament last weekend.

The Series: Friday’s game is the fifth all-time meeting between the schools with Virginia winning each of the previous four meetings. In the last meeting, the Cavaliers scored a 5-0 win over the Flames at Klockner Stadium in 2004. The two teams have met once before in the NCAA Tournament. In a 2001 first round game, Virginia topped Liberty 3-0 in Charlottesville. In the four all-time meetings, the Cavaliers have outscored the Flames 21-0.

NCAA Tournament History: The Cavaliers are making their 18th NCAA Tournament appearance, and 12th consecutive appearance. Virginia has an all-time NCAA Tournament record of 10-15-3. Under Steve Swanson, the Cavaliers have a 7-4-2 NCAA Tournament record. Virginia has advanced in their first game of the tournament in each of the past six years (five wins, one tie with win in penalty kicks). Friday’s game is the 19th home NCAA Tournament for the Cavaliers, who have a 7-9-2 record in home tournament games.
