CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Auburn men’s and women’ swimming and diving teams combined to win 14 of 20 events Friday (November 11) at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center to take early leads in dual meets against Virginia, Penn State and Purdue. After 10 events, the top-ranked Auburn men lead 17th-ranked UVa 101-73, while the Cavaliers trail 14th-rated Purdue 101-85 and 23rd-ranked Penn State 97-89. On the women’s side, second-ranked Auburn has taken a 129-57 lead over 18th-ranked UVa and the Cavaliers also trail 12th-ranked Penn State 95-91.

The Virginia men won a pair of events during the first day of competition. Fourth-year Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./Germantown Academy) led a one-two UVa finish in the 500 freestyle with a winning and NCAA “B” time of 4:23.97. Crippen was also fourth in the 200 butterfly in 1:51.28. Third-year John Millen (Lilburn, Ga./Parkview) placed second in the 500 free with a time of 4:26.38, which also bettered the NCAA “B” qualifying standard. Third-year Vanja Rogulj (Zagreb, Croatia/ Split) grabbed the top spot in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 53.53. Third-year Stefan Hirniak (Highland Park, N.J./Princeton Day) was runner-up in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:47.12 (NCAA B). UVa also finished second in the 400 medley relay as the foursome of first-year Bjorn Falk (Wilton, N.H./High Mowing), Rogulj, Hirniak and fourth-year Ethan McCoy (McMinnville, Ore./McMinnville) clocked a time of 3:18.29.

On the women’s side, second-year Anna Steenrod (Charlotte, N.C/Charlotte Latin) was the lone Cavalier to register a victory. She touched in a NCAA “B” time of 1:03.84 to win the 100 breaststroke. Steenrod was also third in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:04.46. Second-year Jess Lewis (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and third-year Katy Bland (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville) placed third and fourth in the 100 freestyle with times of 51.57 and 51.63, respectively. Fourth-year Rachael Burke (Bethesda Md./Good Counsel) met the NCAA “B” qualifying standard while finishing fourth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:50.86. Fourth-year Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School) turned in a time of 2:00.88 (NCAA B) to take fourth place in the 200 backstroke, while third-year Jenny Steiner (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) was fourth in the 100 breast (1:04.59). First-year Jackie Apple (New Albany, Ohio/ New Albany) took third place in the one and three-meter diving events with scores of 232.80 and 249.30, respectively.

The Auburn men won six events while the Tiger women were victorious eight times. Purdue won the men’s one-meter diving competition for its lone win. Penn State won the men’s three-meter diving event and the women’s 400 medley relay.

The meet concludes Saturday (November 12) at 11:00 a.m. at the Aquatic and Fitness Center with nine more events for both the women and men.
