Virginia Wrestling Opens Season with Two Wins over GWU, Anderson

GREENSBORO, N.C. – – Damian Johnson, Brent Jones and Kyle Narkiewicz each posted 3-0 records to lead the University of Virginia wrestling team to two dual meet wins in a season opening meet at Fleming Gymnasium hosted by UNC Greensboro Saturday. The Cavaliers (2-1) defeated Gardner-Webb, 37-6, Anderson 38-3, but fell to UNC Greensboro, 25-9.
Virginia began the day with the 37-6 win over Gardner-Webb. Anthony Burke and Johnson each won by fall as Burke at 125 pounds pinned GWU’s Matt Taylor at 6:52 and Johnson at 165 registered a pin of GWU’s Dave Pelsang at 2:19. Narkiewicz earned his first decision of the day – an 8-6 win over GWU’s Brandon Beach at 184. Jones earned his first collegiate win by forfeit at 197 pounds. Eric Albright and Mike Grogan both earned decisions in their matches while Mike Sewell also won by forfeit.
Against UNC Greensboro, Johnson earned a 6-4 decision over the Spartans’ Mark Ring. Narkiewicz then earned his second decision of the day when defeated Kane Smith at 184, 5-4. Jones’ first decision for the Cavaliers came over Daren Burns, 7-5, at 197.
Burke registered his second fall of the day when he pinned Anderson’s Tyler Davis at 6:23. Johnson pinned Forrest Garner at 4:56 for his second pin of the day. Mike Grogan pinned Hunter Garner at 174 at 4:35. Virginia’s Eric Albright registered a major decision over Anthony DiCarlo at 133 pounds, 12-2. Andrew DiPasquale’s first major decision of the season came when he defeated Anderson’s Codey Bearden, 11-2. Sewell, Narkiewicz, Jones and Nick Smith each earned decisions for the Cavaliers against Anderson.
Virginia returns to action next Sunday, Nov. 20 when the Cavaliers take part in the Keystone Classic hosted by Penn.
