CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s tennis team opened its 2006 schedule Saturday as play began at the 2006 Virginia Women’s Tennis Invitational. The four-team event is the first competition in the new indoor tennis stadium at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.

The Cavaliers opened play on Saturday by playing Wisconsin in doubles. Virginia took two of the three matches, winning at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Fourth-years Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) and Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) scored an 8-0 win over Kaylan Caiati and Morgan Tuttle at No. 2, while Rachel DelPriore (Williamsville, N.Y.) and Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) posted an 8-3 win at No. 3. In the other doubles matchup, Alabama took two of three doubles matches from Purdue.

In the afternoon, the Cavaliers played Alabama in singles as the teams split the six matches. The Crimson Tide won at the No. 1-3 positions, while the Cavaliers won at the No. 4-6 positions. James won her match at No. 4, downing Mari Muller 6-4, 6-0. Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) also won in straight sets, defeating Andrea Brenes at No. 5. Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md,) scored a win at No. 6, defeating Sofia Ayala 6-3, 2-6, 6-0. In other singles action, Purdue won four of six singles matches from Wisconsin.

“It was great to start this season in our new facility, in front of our fans,” said head coach Mark Guilbeau. “This is clearly one of the best facilities in the country. I was very proud of the effort from our team today, including a lot of the hidden effort that makes the difference on the court. Almost across the board, we put forth a great effort and we, as coaches, appreciate that. Today was a good step forward for this team and was an obvious indication of the hard work we have put in during practice.”

The tournament continues on Sunday with play beginning at 10:00 a.m.
