CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – In their last home meet of the season, the nationally-ranked Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving team emerged victorious over Pittsburgh on Senior Day Sunday afternoon (Jan. 29) at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The 13th-ranked Cavalier men won eight of 13 events in their 130-111 victory over 25th-ranked Pittsburgh to improve to 8-3. The 18th-ranked Virginia women touched first in 10 of 13 events in registering a 133-105 win over the Panthers to improve to 5-3 on the year.

The UVa men registered a trio top-three sweeps in its 130-111 victory over Pittsburgh (8-2). Fourth-year Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./Germantown Academy) capped off his home meet career in fine fashion as he registered three victories. He led top three UVa sweeps in the 1000 free and 400 individual medley and also won the 500 freestyle. Crippen clocked a time of 9:04.00 in winning the 1000 free with third-year John Millen (Lilburn, Ga./Parkview) taking second (9:21.37) and first-year Stefan Bartl (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) finishing third (9:42.59). In the 400 individual medley, Crippen posted a time of 3:55.08 in taking the top spot, while second-year Ryan Hurley (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep) was second (4:02.72) and first-year T.J. Southmayd (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) took third (4:02.98). Crippen rounded out his day by cruising to a victory in the 500 free with a time of 4:28.34. Millen grabbed second place in the 500 free with a time of 4:34.55.

Third-year Stefan Hirniak (Highland Park, N.J./Princeton Day) recorded a pair of first-place finishes. He won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:39.83 and also touched first in the 200 butterfly in 1:49.07. The Cavaliers’ third top three sweep came in the 200 breaststroke with third-year Vanja Rogulj (Zagreb, Croatia/Split) leading the way with a time of 2:00.28. Hurley was second (2:03.63), while second-year PJ Sullivan (Franklin, Mass./Bishop Feehan) was third (2:04.40). Virginia’s other individual event winner was first-year Bjorn Falk (Wilton, N.H./High Mowing), who won the 200 backstroke in 1:49.97. UVa also won the meet-opening 200 medley relay in a time of 1:30.44. Second-year Bryan Stahl (Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands), Rogulj, first-year Lee Robertson (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro), and third-year Greg Imboden (Chattanooga, Tenn./McCallie) each swam legs on the winning relay.

The UVa women won 10 of 13 events in its 133-105 victory over Pittsburgh (7-3). Fourth-year Katie Gordon (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) won a pair of events in the final home meet of her career. She won the 400 I.M. with a season-best time of 4:18.79 in leading a top-three Cavalier sweep and also touched first in the 500 freestyle with time of 4:52.90, another season-best performance. Second-year Anna Steenrod (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) was second in the 400 I.M. (4:21.49) and third-year Erin Corgan (Marietta, Ga./Marist) was third (4:25.72). Third-year Rory Schmidt (Phoenix, Ariz./Arcadia) was runner-up in the 500 free (4:58.07).

Fourth-years Rachael Burke (Bethesda, Md./Good Counsel) and Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School) also posted individual event victories in their final home meet. Burke won the 1000 free by more than nine seconds with her time of 10:00.21, with Schmidt finishing second (10:09.63). White won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:02.17 and also led off UVa’s winning 200 medley relay that clocked a time of 1:44.41. Steenrod, second-year Stephanie Glover (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) and second-year Jess Lewis (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) joined White on the winning medley relay. Third-year Jenny Steiner (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:19.28.

First-year Jackie Apple (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) joined Gordon as a double individual event winner. She won the one-meter diving competition with 234.83 points and scored 263.33 points to take the top spot on the three-meter board. Third-year Katy Bland (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville) posted a time of 51.67 to win the 100 free, while first-year Megan Evo (Beverly Hills, Mich./Groves) was victorious in the 200 butterfly (2:03.16). Fourth-year Elaine Bennett (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) was runner-up in the 200 fly (2:04.19) and the 200 breast (2:20.11).

UVa closes out its dual meet season on Saturday (Feb. 4) when it travels to College Park for a 1:00 p.m. meet against Maryland.
