Cavaliers Shut Out Towson in Series Opener, 7-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Mike Ballard, Michael Schwimer and Alex Smith combined for a four-hit shutout and freshman third baseman Jeremy Farrell went 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI as Virginia shut out Towson, 7-0, in the first game of the three-game series at Davenport Field Friday afternoon. The Cavaliers improved to 3-1 on the season and won their first home game of the season.
“It was nice to bounce back after a tough loss at home Wednesday night,” UVa head coach Brian O’Connor said. “We attacked early and our overall focus was better today. Mike Ballard had another good performance on the mound for us and Michael Schwimer and Alex Smith both did a good job in relief appearances. It was also nice to see our freshman third baseman Jeremy Farrell have a three-hit day.”
Ballard tossed six scoreless innings and struck out five. He allowed four hits. Schwimer made his second appearance of the season and pitched two hitless innings while Smith followed shutting down the last three batters of the game. Tim Henry went 2-for-5 with two RBI while freshman David Adams and junior Mike Mitchell each were 2-for-4. Adams added two RBIs while Mitchell drove in one run.
A four-run seventh inning gave the Hoos the 7-0 lead. Mitchell led off the inning with a double down the right field line and scored on Henry’s second hit of the game to make it, 4-0. Virginia tacked on two more runs on a two-run single by Adams to go ahead, 6-0. Farrell doubled in Tom Hagan for the final run of the game for the Hoos.
Virginia capitalized on an infield single from Tim Henry and an error by Towson. Brandon Guyer’s single to left field scored Henry putting the Hoos ahead, 1-0. The Cavaliers added a run in the botom of the second when Mike Mitchell singled to left center scoring Jeremy Farrell for the 2-0 lead.
Virginia scored one in the bottom of the fifth when Greg Miclat scored on Henry’s fielder’s choice putting UVa head, 3-0.
Pat Fields, Ryan Schreiter, Brian Summerlin and Gary Helmick each had one hit for the Tigers. Chris Rhoades suffered the loss for Towson allowing two earned runs on six hits in five innings. He had four strikeouts.
Virginia and Towson continue their series Saturday at 1 p.m. RHP Jacob Thompson for the Cavaliers will face RHP Matt Holley.
