Cavalier Men's Tennis Falls to Washington at National Indoors

SEATTLE, Wash. – The Virginia men’s tennis team suffered a 4-1 loss Friday night to Washington in the round of 16 of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on the UW campus. The loss drops the Cavaliers’ record to 7-4 on the season, and marks their first two-match losing streak since the 2004 season.
The Huskies (7-0) opened the match by taking the doubles point for a 1-0 lead. Washington won at No. 1 doubles where Daniel Chu and Alex Slovic topped Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) 8-3. At No. 3 doubles, Jean-Noel Insausti and Mike Ricks defeated Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) and Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) 8-5. Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.) were leading 7-5 at No. 2 doubles when their match was abandoned.
In singles, the Huskies increased their lead to 3-0 with a pair of straight set wins. Klaus Junk defeated Jarrett Chirico (Sarasota, Fla.) at No. 6 singles and Insausti defeated Huey at No. 3 singles. The Cavaliers needed to win the final four matches on the courts to rally for the victory, and won the first set in each match in a tiebreaker. However, the Huskies rallied to force a third set in all four matches. Virginia won the first of those three set matches as Rizza defeated Andy Kuharszky at No. 4 singles. Minutes later, the Huskies clinched the win as Chu defeated Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) at the No. 5 position. The final two matches were abandoned.
The Cavaliers will play in the consolation bracket Saturday against Arkansas, a 4-0 loser to Illinois Friday. That match will start at 5:30 p.m. PT at the Seattle Tennis Center.
