Miami Lakes, FL – The 13th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team finished third at the Papa John’s Collegiate Championship held at Don Shula’s Golf Club in Miami Lakes, Fla. The Cavaliers turned in a 54-hole score of 36-over 900, eight shots behind North Carolina State. East Carolina was second at 896.

Virginia could not overcome a slow start that saw the Cavaliers post an opening round score of 307, dropping them to eighth place. The team rebounded with a 298 Monday before posting their best 18-hole total Tuesday.

Virginia was led by junior Leah Wigger, who finished second at 5-over 221. Wigger pulled off the runner-up finish despite shooting 3-over 75, her highest single round of the tournament. South Florida’s Christina Jones took medalist honors at 2-under 214.

Wigger’s finished marked the third time this season she has place in the top-10 in four tournaments. It also equaled her best tournament finish. She was the runner-up at last year’s NCAA Championships.

The Cavaliers managed to place four golfers among the top 20 finishers. Virginia’s second best score was by Sally Shonk, who tied for 13th at 9-over 225. She had rounds of 75, 77 and 73. Shonk, a junior, competed as an individual and her scores did not count toward the Cavalier team totals. The Papa John’s Collegiate was her first competition of the season. Her score equaled her best outing. She also finished at 225 in the ACC-SEC Challenge as a freshman.

Freshman Jennie Arseneault had rounds of 76, 77 and 73 to tie for 16th in her collegiate debut. Lauren Mielbrecht was 20th at 227. Rachel Smith placed 25th at 230 and Carly Truitt rounded out UVa’s scoring with a 43rd-place finish at 236.

Virginia returns to action March 3-5 at the Cleveland Golf Classic held at LSU.
