Cavaliers Knock Off No. 1 Georgia Tech, 6-3, for O'Connor's 100th

ATLANTA, Ga. – – Sean Doolittle struck out seven in six innings for his fourth win of the season and Virginia added two insurance runs in the top of ninth as the Cavaliers defeated No. 1 Georgia Tech, 6-3, Sunday afternoon to snap the nation’s longest win streak and give UVa head baseball coach Brian O’Connor his 100th career victory in front of 2,640 fans at Russ Chandler Stadium. Casey Lambert picked up his third save of the season while Brandon Guyer finished 3-for-5 at the plate for the Cavaliers (15-4, 1-2 ACC), who out-hit Georgia Tech, 14-8.
“This was a great win for us. We knew it was going to be a tough series. Our guys came out ready to play today and we battled all day long in a hostile environment. Sean (Doolittle) kept us in the game and we scored a couple of runs when we needed to” O’Connor said. “They had a great crowd this weekend and that makes a difference in a three-game ACC series. Hopefully, our fans will come out next weekend as we open our ACC home schedule.”
Doolittle held the Yellow Jackets (16-1, 2-1 ACC) to two runs on six hits. Michael Schwimer pitched one scoreless inning. Lambert pitched the final two innings and held Georgia Tech to one run on two hits. Tim Ladd (2-1) took the loss allowing four runs on six hits in 1 1/3 innings. Doolittle also finished 2-for-3 with one RBI. Greg Miclat and Tom Hagan each had two hits.
Virginia scored two runs in the top of the ninth. Doolittle walked and scored on Guyer’s RBI single up the middle. Guyer stole second and scored on Patrick Wingfield’s double down the right field line as the Cavs led, 6-3.
After Georgia Tech had both lead-off runners on in the bottom of the ninth, Jeff Kindel grounded into a double play and Matt Wieters flied out to center field to end the game. The Yellow Jackets pulled within, 4-3, in the bottom of the eighth, when Luke Murton’s sacrifice fly scored Wieters.
Wieters first home run of the season, a solo shot to right field, pulled the Yellow Jackets within, 4-2, in the bottom of the seventh.
Virginia used three doubles in the top of the second to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Farrell led off with a double down the right field line. He scored on Beau Seabury’s double to the wall in left center putting the Hoos ahead, 1-0. Tim Henry then doubled down the left field line to score Seabury. Greg Miclat’s second base-hit of the game brought Henry in for the three-run Cavalier lead. Doolittle then followed with an RBI single up the middle for UVa’s fourth run.
Georgia Tech scored its first run in the bottom of the fifth. Michael Fisher’s RBI single up the middle scored Mike Trapani, who led off the inning with a single to left field to make it, 4-1. The Yellow Jackets loaded the bases with two outs, but Doolittle got Jeff Kindel to check swing on a 3-2 count to end the inning.
Mike Trapani led Georgia Tech at the plate going 2-for-4. Virginia out-hit the Yellow Jackets, 35-24, in the series.
The Cavaliers return home now for a mid-week game against Dayton on Wednesday before hosting Clemson next weekend at Davenport Field.
