CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 19th-ranked Virginia women’s swimming and diving team begins competition in the three-day 2006 NCAA Championships Thursday (March 16) at Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga. Fourth-years Rachael Burke (Bethesda, Md./Good Counsel), Katie Gordon (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep), and Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School) and second-year Anna Steenrod (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) will represent UVa at the NCAA Championships.

Burke and Gordon take to the water Thursday (March 16) in the second event of the championship, the 500 freestyle. Steenrod will compete in the third event of the meet, the 200 individual medley.

White begins competition on Friday (March 17) in the 100 backstroke, while Gordon and Steenrod compete in the 400 individual medley. Steenrod will also swim the 100 breaststroke Friday.

White is a two-time first-team All-American in the 100 backstroke (2004 and 2005) and also earned honorable mention accolades in 2003. She is a two-time honorable mention All-American in the 200 backstroke as well. Burke was an honorable mention All-American in the 1650 free in 2005 as well as the 1500-meter free in 2004. She was runner-up in the mile as a first-year in 2003. Burke was a first-team All-American in the 500 free in 2003, while Gordon was an honorable mention All-American in the 500 free in 2003. Steenrod is competing in her first NCAA Championship.
