Charlottesville, VA — Virginia junior women’s golfer Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.) will begin her play at the NCAA Championships Tuesday morning at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course. The 72-hole tournament runs through Friday.

Wigger qualified for the NCAAs after tying for sixth at the NCAA East Regional, earning one of the two at-large spots from the field. Virginia lost a one-hole playoff to Alabama for the regional’s final qualifying berth. Wigger will be paired with other individual qualifiers Julia Best of Texas and Joanna Klatten from Georgia State. Their group will open the tournament at 8 a.m. from the No. 10 tee.

Last season Wigger finished second at the NCAAs in Sunriver, Ore., while helping the Cavaliers to a 13th-place team showing. She shot 3-over 287, including a 3-under 69 during the final round.

Wigger has led UVa this season with a 73.23 stroke average in 30 rounds. That average is on pace to set a single-season school record for stroke average. She had nine top-10 finishes in 10 tournaments this year to increase her school record total in that area to 16 during her career.

Wigger, ranked 21st by Golfweek, enters the NCAAs coming off her best outing of the season. She shot 3-under 69 during the final round of the NCAA East Regional for a 54-hole total of 1-under 215. Both scores were seasons lows for the Cavaliers this year.
