MEXICO CITY – Former Cavalier tennis player Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) earned his first career ATP tour points, reaching the quarterfinals of last week’s Futures Tour event in Mexico City. Cohen advanced from qualifying to reach the main draw, where he won two matches to reach the quarterfinals.

Early in the week, Cohen advanced to the main draw by winning three matches in the qualifying draw, all in straight sets.

In the main draw, Cohen opened play with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jose-Pablo Arizpe-Balderas in the round of 32. In the round of 16, Cohen upset third-seeded Rafael Arevalo-Gonzalez, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to reach the quarters. Arevalo-Gonzalez is currently ranked in the top 700 in the world rankings. Cohen’s run came to an end in the quarterfinals where he fell to Miguel-Angel Reyes-Varela 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.

Cohen is competing in another Futures event this week in Comitan, Mexico.
