CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Junior midfielder Nico Colaluca scored in the 16th and junior midfielder Sean Hinkle and junior forward Matt Ayotte added second half goals as No. 3 Virginia shut out VCU, 3-0, Saturday night at Klockner Stadium. It was the final exhibition game for the Cavaliers, who went 2-0 in their preseason exhibition matches.

“I was very pleased with our effort tonight,” UVa head coach George Gelnovatch said. “We had some good looks on goal and finished our opportunities. The other night, we had some great looks, but missed some scoring chances, so I was happy with our adjustments.”

Virginia out-shot VCU, 11-5 and held a 4-0 advantage on corner kicks.

Colaluca put the Cavaliers ahead, 1-0, in the 16th minute. He bent a shot just by the VCU goalkeeper on a free kick from the top of the box.

The Cavaliers went ahead 2-0 in the 50th minute when Hinkle found the top left corner of the goal. Neil Barlow took a long pass from across the field on the right side. Barlow found Hinkle in the corner from about 12 yards out. Hinkle turned and nailed a shot for his first preseason goal.

Matt Ayotte’s second goal of the preseason put Virginia ahead, 3-0. Chris Tierney chipped a perfect cross into the box that found the head of Ayotte, who put the ball into the net to extend the Cavalier lead.
