Virginia Volleyball Downs Centenary 3-0

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Virginia volleyball team wrapped up play in the Comcast Lady Vol Classic with a 3-0 (30-12, 30-15, 30-15) victory over Centenary Saturday (Aug. 26) at Stokely Athletic Center. Earlier in the day, the Cavaliers registered a 3-0 (30-24, 30-26, 30-20) win over Miami (Ohio). UVa concludes the tournament with a 2-1 record, while Centenary falls to 0-3.
Third-year outside hitter Sarah Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla.) led the Cavaliers with 19.5 points. She hit a career-best .706 with 12 kills on 17 attempts with no errors. Kirkwood also tallied 10 digs for her second consecutive double-double and added six service aces, three blocks and three assists.
Third-year middle Katie Oakes (Lorton, Va.) was the only other player to reach double figures in kills as she tallied 11 while hitting .348. Oakes also led all players with eight blocks and recorded the first two service aces of her career. First-year outside hitter Lauren Dickson (Austin, Texas) added seven kills while hitting .368. Second-year setter Marlow Bruneau (Lakeville, Minn.) dished out 33 assists and also contributed four digs, four blocks, three kills and two aces.
Ashlee Freeman led Centenary with eight kills, while Danielle Bochat added six kills. Setter Lindsay Bekelja posted a double-double with 19 assists and 12 digs.
The Cavaliers hit an impressive .380 against Centenary with 43 kills and just eight errors. The Ladies had 24 kills and 24 errors for a .000 hitting percentage. UVa notched 14 service aces while Centenary had none. Virginia also held a 10-2 edge in team blocks and a slight 37-35 advantage in digs.
Virginia never trailed in winning the first game 30-12. The Ladies tied the game at 1-1, but a solo block by Oakes gave UVa the lead for good. The Cavaliers held Centenary to a -.139 hitting percentage in the first game. The Cavaliers hit .375 in winning the second game 30-15. Sarah Kirkwood registered four of her six aces in the game. In the third game, Centenary took an early lead, but Sarah Kirkwood gave Virginia the lead for good, 6-5, with a kill. The Cavaliers hit an impressive .452 as a team in winning the third game 30-15.
Virginia returns to action Sept. 1-2 when it hosts the Jefferson Cup Volleyball Tournament at Memorial Gym. The Cavaliers begin play in the tournament on Friday (Sept. 1) at 7:00 p.m. against Georgetown. On Saturday (Sept. 2), UVa plays Wright State at 1:00 p.m. and East Carolina at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
