Virginia Volleyball Blocks Its Way To 3-0 Win Over Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Virginia volleyball team recorded a season-high 19 blocks in the process of registering a 3-0 (30-27, 34-32, 30-21) victory over Maryland Saturday (Sept. 30) at Comcast Center Pavilion. Third-year middle Katie Oakes (Lorton, Va.) led UVa’s outstanding defensive effort with a career high 11 blocks and she also added 12 kills for her first career double-double. With the victory, the Cavaliers stretch their winning streak to five matches and stand at 12-3 overall and 5-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Terrapins fall to 7-6 overall and 0-4 in the ACC.
Virginia’s 19 team blocks ties for the fourth highest single match total in school history. Among Oakes’ career best 11 blocks were three solo stuffs, which tied her career high. With the 12 kills and 11 blocks, Oakes amassed a match-best 19 points. First-year outside hitter Lauren Dickson (Austin, Texas) was right behind Oakes in kills with 11. Dickson also added seven digs, two service aces and two blocks. Fourth-year outside hitter Lindsay Osco (Houston, Texas) was the third Cavalier in double figure in kills with 10. Osco had three blocks, three digs and a service ace as well. Second-year middle Shannon Davis (Austin, Texas) posted a match-best .389 hitting percentage as she had eight kills with only one hitting error to go along with eight blocks.
Fourth-year setter Emily Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla.) recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 37 assists and 10 digs. Kirkwood also added six blocks and a pair of service aces. Third-year libero Melissa Caldwell (Houston, Texas) led all players with 18 digs and she also tallied three assists. Third-year rightside hitter Stephanie Everett (Cincinnati, Ohio) contributed both offensively and defensively with six kills and five blocks.
Mary Beth Brown was the only Maryland player to reach double figures in kills as she had 11. Jade Brown posted nine kills and 12 digs, while Katie Usher added eight kills and six blocks.
UVa outhit Maryland .189 to .058 and had 48 kills compared to the Terps’ 42. The Cavaliers also held a 19-10 advantage in team blocks. Maryland led 62-53 in digs and 7-6 in service aces.
The Cavaliers won the first game 30-27. UVa trailed 27-26, but scored the final four points on kills by Oakes and Osco, sandwiched around a pair of Maryland hitting errors. In game two, Virginia led 29-24, but the Terrapins scored six consecutive points to take a 30-29 lead. Davis helped UVa pull out the 34-32 win by scoring four of UVa’s final five points with kills. The Cavaliers wrapped up the victory with a 30-21 win in game three. Virginia took the lead for good with a 7-0 run that turned a one-point deficit into a 13-7 lead. The Terrapins had 15 hitting errors in the game, eight of which were Cavalier blocks.
Virginia returns to action on Friday (Oct. 6) with a 7:00 p.m. match against Duke in Durham, N.C.
